What if there was a single corporation so strong that it seceded from the Union? Here's the backdrop:
A Corporation in modern day Washington state is the leader in nearly all fields of research. In an unprecedented move, the company suddenly cuts all ties with its foreign manufacturing plants, moving all of it's jobs into the state of Washington, making it one of the largest entirely american companies. The state, of course, begins to prosper, due the huge influx of open jobs. It quickly becomes the wealthiest state in the US, and the corporation expands. In another unprecedented move, the President and CEO runs for mayor of the town that the main offices are located in. He wins the election. Due to the unique blending of government and business, the town fairs exceptionally well. People are still flocking to Washington to get jobs with the corporation, and the town keeps prospering. There seems to be no malpractice within the organization. It is a shining beacon of hope for an otherwise suffering American economy. At the next Governor election, the CEO is a shoe-in. When he takes office there, he immediately does nothing out of the ordinary. He seems to be able to balance perfectly. The corporation continues to thrive, the state continues to prosper, while the rest of America is experiencing record lows in every state but Washington. It soon becomes clear that the Corporation is being held back by it's Federal obligations, and the Federal Government is leaning on the state of Washington, nearly to the crushing point. And so, in a surprising move, the Governor/President/CEO anounces that Washington is leaving the Union, and they have not only the economy to support themselves, but the military as well. They had been amassing an army of their own, and brandished themselves at just the right moment. However, the new Country opened the arms of trade, and were well received, by everyone but the United States. They realized that they could nothing to prevent the secesion, and injured their chances of trade with the fledging yet powerful nation.
The new nation soon purchased some land from Canada, and slowly bought up more and more American soil.
From here I feel like the story could go any number of ways. I could focus on the research and development of the Corporation, which could let me delve into magic and fantasy type things. I could simply discuss the corporation's rise to power. I could talk about years in the future as historians uncover the corporation's rise to power.
Anyway. More later, perhaps.
